Good Mood Foods

There have been many times in my life when I turned to junk food and fast food when I was feeling bored or unhappy, hoping it would make me feel better. Pizza, laksa, Mars Bars ... Over time, I realised that it just made me feel unhealthy, sluggish and even more unhappy. So, instead of constantly reaching for the Tim Tams to make myself feel better, I started to eat foods that science shows may truly bring a smile to your dial. So, go on, give these five foods a try, and boost your mood for the better. You'll be glad you did.

Lentils

With lentils, the advantages are three-fold: protein, high-quality carbohydrates and soluble fibre. Fibre slows the release of complex carbs into the blood stream, helping to stabilise your blood sugars and increasing the brain’s production of the feel-good neurotransmitter serotonin. The result? A calmer, happier state of mind with less anxiety.

Brazil Nuts

Studies have shown increased depression, irritability, anxiety and tiredness in people with low selenium levels – so by just eating Brazil Nuts a couple of times a week, this can help to improve your mood.

Chilli

I loooove spicy food! But did you know that chillies can give you a mood boost too? As the body defends itself against capsaicin, the chemical that causes the hot sensation when eating chillies, the brain releases endorphins, which are the body's natural painkillers, leaving you with a natural high.

Oysters

You might love them or loathe them – but either way, there’s no denying that oysters have many health benefits. They contain a protein that's rich in an amino acid called tyrosine. Your brain uses this amino acid to produce chemicals, which have the ability to help enhance your mental function and elevate your mood.

Grapes

Grapes contain high levels of endorphin-producing Vitamin C and are full of natural sugar for energy, which acts as a great mood booster. Red and black grapes are particularly high in polyphenols, a powerful source of antioxidant that helps to protect against cancer and heart disease. One of our favourite ways to enjoy grapes is by freezing them. A delicious and healthy summer treat!
