One thing people are always asking us is how they can get more energy. We get it - we're all so busy juggling family, jobs, friends, to-do lists a mile long, social and work commitments and so much more, it's no wonder we're all so exhausted.
For Maha (my sister, who is also my Super Green Smoothies co-author and SWIISH partner) and I, the best way to give ourselves a big boost of energy each and every day - so that we can juggle all that stuff - is with our Super Green Smoothies. Like we said... if you're finding yourself in a 3pm slump, or even an around-the-clock slump that only coffee can fix, putting a big dose of vitamins and minerals into your body will help sort that right out. A lack of energy is something that affects so many of us. With our lives getting busier and busier, our bodies tend to get put under a lot of stress and we don’t always have time to give them the love and respect they deserve. If you’re always eating on the go, you may not be making the healthiest food choices either. This means your body is constantly fighting to clean out all the toxins that are entering it - no wonder you're exhausted! Bloated belly? Tummy cramps? Sluggish digestion? We’ve all been there at some point, but when it’s happening day in and day out it may be a sign that there’s something else is going on. These symptoms can be due to a poorly functioning digestive system and can lead to other health problems like headaches, breakouts and fatigue. To keep your tummy healthy it's important to include a sufficient amount of fibre-rich foods in your diet in order to sweep away all that nasty stuff and keep your gut-lining healthy. With a heap of healthy, tummy-friendly ingredients you'll make your belly very happy with a green smoothie.
BRING BACK STRONG HAIR, SKIN & NAILS
It’s not uncommon to start seeing tangled tresses, spotted skin and brittle nails when your body is getting a little run down. Don’t worry - this can be fixed. Fruits and vegetables are packed full of powerful antioxidants that help protect the skin against the cellular damage caused by free radicals in the air. Free radicals are brought about by pollution, smoking and sun exposure and can cause skin discoloration and wrinkling. Eating at least 5 portions of vegetables and fruit a day is extremely important if you want healthy, glowing skin! Also, not getting enough protein and calcium in your diet can be the reason your hair and nails keep breaking. With a variety of antioxidant-rich and protein-packed recipes, the 30 day challenge is the perfect way to bring your hair, skin and nails back to life.
SHED THOSE EXTRA POUNDS
Okay, so you mightn't gain a six pack overnight (a girl can dream!) but Maha and I, together with many of our Challenge participants have shed unwanted kilos. We like to pile up on a plate the ingredients of a green smoothie - it often looks like a huuuuuuuuge mountain of spinach, kale, cucumber, broccoli, avocado plus fruit such as banana, mango, kiwifruit or pineapple. Plus don't forget the superfoods. We could never eat that much if it were put in front of us on a plate. But if it were blended, on the other hand, and we had it for breakfast... it would be easy to drink, taste delicious and keep us feeling full until lunch. We wouldn't reach for that mid-morning muffin or that 3pm block of chocolate. So, not only have we skipped the calories and fats from unhealthy snacking, but the smoothies in our 30 Day Challenge all contain under 300 calories per smoothie. When combined with clean, healthy eating the rest of the day, getting lean is totally possible.
STOP THE SNIFFLES
If you’re not eating a balanced diet full of nutrients, vitamins and minerals, you’re body goes into an acidic state and your immune system stops working at its best. Hello runny noses and sore throats! Now I know with time constraints, it can be hard to get all the vitamins and minerals you need.
The fastest way to get your body back in to a healthy alkaline state is to up your daily vege intake to at least 5 servings a day. One or two smoothies a day and you’ll knock this goal out of the park! Also, almost all our smoothies contain other alkaline boosting ingredients like almond milk and coconut too, making them a wonderful immune-boosting beverage!
