The Science
Osteoporosis
Low intakes of calcium have been associated with a condition of low bone density called osteoporosis which is quite common in western cultures and which often results in bone fracture. Calcium intake throughout life is a major factor affecting the incidence of osteoporosis.
(National Health & Medical research Council (NHMRC). Nutrient Reference Values for Australia and New Zealand. 2006. P.155-163)
Bone Health
Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption in the gut and maintains adequate serum calcium and phosphate concentrations to enable normal mineralisation of bone and to prevent hypocalcemic tetany. It is also needed for bone growth and bone remodelling by osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Without sufficient vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, or misshapen. Osteoporosis is most often associated with inadequate calcium intakes, but insufficient vitamin D contributes to osteoporosis by reducing calcium absorption.
(National Institute of Health, National Institute of Health Monographs. US Department of Health and Human services. 2018)
Bone Mineralisation
Recent research reveals Vitamin K is a cofactor in bone metabolism. Vitamin K functions in the post-translational modification of a number of vitamin K-dependent proteins such as osteocalcin, a bone protein containing gamma-carboxyglutamic acid, discovered in 1975. These proteins are involved with calcium uptake and bone mineralisation. Furthermore, recent findings suggest it may be an important cofactor in the treatment and prevention of atherosclerosis and calcified arterial plaque. Compared to the other vitamin K analogues, vitamin K2 has the most potent gamma-carboxylation activity.
